The City of San José is piloting the use of sidewalk delivery robots. Delivery robots are small devices that are remotely operated, self-driving, or both. They primarily operate on sidewalks and other pedestrian areas, but at times they operate on the street. Delivery robots are frequently used for food delivery but can be used to transport any items that fit into the device’s storage compartment.
The purpose of our pilot is to gain community insight about delivery robots, test the functionality of this technology on our sidewalks and streets, and understand the value delivery robots bring to our city. Piloting these devices is a first step in making informed local policies around these devices.
